A story tense, violent and exciting about a band of amoral bank robbers, led by William Holden, pursued across the United States and Mexico in 1914 by a reluctant Ryan Robert. Both turn in the career of the best performances in an absorbing story of a dying way of life that carefully avoids sentimentality. Offered at many levels, the complex relationships between the main characters are well explored, and often is torn between contempt, affection and respect for them.
Sam Peckinpah uses vivid imagery, such as the appearance of a car, and the incongruous image of the new world encroaching age reflects the mood of the film.It s easy to see why this film has been so influential on the likes of Quentin Tarantino and John Woo, especially in action sequences. Stylistically, SA s decade before spawning time and despite many imitations, the game is incomparable sandy weapons even today s standards. The sense of reality is carried out by ingenious touches such as the lack of subtitles when the dialogue switches to Spanish, but these episodes are brief and not make the film difficult to follow.
Violence means that this movie will not be to everyone s taste, but a true appreciation of the Western genre would not be complete without it. An excellent score adds to the tension in the rough, and Lucien Ballard s photography is a real pleasure.
